Proposed Sale of Warships to Romania
In March 1922 a Foreign Office letter to the Finnish Government terminating negotiations for the sale of second-hand British Destroyers to Finland, referred to the simultaneous termination of negotiations with four other nations. Handwritten notes on the draft of this letter in the Foreign Office files identify one of those nations as Romania. No further details of this proposal have been identified, although it is known that Romania also enquired about procuring the monitor Gorgon (originally laid down as the Norwegian coast defence ship Nidaros, but taken over by the RN during the war) and six ‘M’ class destroyers around this time.
