Proposed Sale of Warships to Argentina
In March 1922, a Foreign Office letter to the Finnish Government terminating negotiations for the sale of second-hand British Destroyers to Finland, referred to the simultaneous termination of negotiations with four other nations. Handwritten notes on the draft of this letter in the Foreign Office files identify one of those nations as Argentina.
It is believed that this refers to a request by Argentina to purchase a British Minesweeper to employ as a surveying vessel, although it is known that Argentina had also enquired about procuring the monitor Gorgon (originally laid down as the Norwegian coast defence ship Nidaros, but taken over by the RN during the war) in approximately 1920.n
