USN Technical Mission to Europe
The United States Naval Technical Mission to Europe was established on 26 December 1944 to investigate and exploit German scientific and technological developments for the benefit of the US Navy. Its personnel inspected research establishments, factories, shipyards and military installations; examined captured equipment and documents; and interviewed German scientists, engineers and naval officers.
Detailed findings were recorded in several hundred Technical Reports covering subjects such as submarines, torpedoes, mines, naval ordnance, radar, guided weapons, aircraft, propulsion, fuels, ship construction and scientific research. The surviving records provide an extensive account of German naval and military technology at the end of the Second World War.
