This former Gearing class destroyer is preserved in Anping District, Tainan City, in south-west Taiwan. She served for about 30 years in the US Navy as USS Sarsfield, including action in Viet Nam, and getting the FRAM II upgrade, and then did another 30 years in the Taiwanese Navy, where she received further weapons upgrades - to the point that the only original weapons left are the DC racks. When she was converted into a museum ship many of the then-current weapons were removed, and replaced with whatever happened to be available - she now has single 5" mountings in A and X positions, 3 Hsiung Feng I SSMs, and 2 triple AS Torpedo Tubes in B position, an ASROC launcher where the forward torpedo tubes were, and a flight deck and hangar for a small helicopter in the after superstructure.Pretty much all of the superstructure is open to visitors, and there is a marked route that takes you through the various compartments, however there is no access below the main weather deck. There has been a lot of effort put into creating displays throughout the ship, and virtually every internal bulkhead is covered with bilingual information boards or photographs covering the history of the ship in both USN and ROCN service. The ship is in reasonable condition and must be getting regular maintenance given it has been a museum for almost 15 years, and the rust isn't that bad. Rather oddly, they appear to have acquired some connection to the 'transformers' (i.e. the anime/cartoon characters) - and there were about half a dozen large transformer statues all over the place on the upper deck.As well as the destroyer, the museum also had an S-2 Tracker and an F-5F aircraft on display out the front. There was a gift shop there, but it mainly had toys, food and clothing - not a single book - so I had to settle for buying yet another museum ship cap. For the whole time I was there, they had loud-speakers playing 'martial' music - and while I wouldn't have picked that much of a cultural connection between the ROCN and the RNZN - I recognised about half of the tunes as being the same music we used to use for parades.The Navy Destroyer Museum is easy to access via public transport, and the entry fee is only 100 Taiwanese Dollars (about $5 AUD or $3 USD).
