I visited the Singapore Navy Museum today - my first time since 2018. Since then, they have completely overhauled the museum, and also shifted the perimeter of the adjacent Naval Base so that you no longer have to go through base security to visit the museum.The museum is a well-funded, modern museum with a lot of high-tech displays integrating audio, video, and artefacts. However it is all exceptionally well done, and they have avoided the trap of turning the museum into a video game. The museum is split into three floors - the bottom floor goes through the history and evolution of the Singaporean Navy, right back into the interwar period, which is something I lamented was missing in 2018. The second floor covers life and service in the navy. While the top floor covers recent operations and international cooperation. Outside they have an equipment park with a range of guns and missiles from decommissioned Singaporean warships, and they also have the conning tower and a section of the upper casing of the submarine Centurion (former Swedish submarine Sjoormen).[As an aside, I learned a new acronym today. We had Wrens - the Singaporeans had SWANS (Singapore Womens Auxiliary Naval Service)]The museum is on the far eastern edge of Singapore Island, next to Changi Naval Base on a large section of reclaimed land beyond Changi international airport. Getting there on weekends and public holidays is pretty easy, as they run an hourly shuttle bus from the nearest MRT station (Expo). During the week there is public transport available. There is a gift shop there, mainly selling clothing and souvenirs - and unfortunately no books. The staff are very friendly and helpful.Like pretty much everything else in Singapore, this place is well organised, and well done. It is definitely worth a visit if you are passing through.
