Reported ceding of US warships to Argentina
On 30 August 1922, the American Steamer American Legion was involved in a maritime mishap in Buenos Aires which resulted in her running into a corner of the basin where some Argentine naval craft were moored. She sunk the Argentine dispatch vessel Azopardo, and damaged the gunboat Patria, transports Patagonia and Pampa¸ dispatch vessel Gaviota, and the survey ship Alfarez Mackinlay.
On 11 September 1922, it was reported in the Times that the US Government had offered Argentina a vessel to replace the Azopardo. It was further alleged that the Times reported that the US Government proposed to cede to Argentina a destroyer and four submarine chasers in compensation for the damaged Argentine ships. Britain advised the US that it assumed that the report was in error, as it would contravene the informal agreement concluded at the Washington Naval Conference.
