Today's visit was to the Royal Norwegian Navy Museum in Horten.The museum itself was closed for Easter (which along with 'closed for winter' and 'you didn't come on the one day we are open this week/fortnight' could be the theme of this holiday!). However the outdoor area was open to the public, and there were quite a few locals just walking around.They had three ships outdoors when I was there: Narvik is one of the Oslo class frigates, which were a derivative of the USN Dealey class DEs. Blink was a Storm class FAC built under the US MDAP - originally a Motor Torpedo Boat but later upgraded to a missile boat. Utstein was a German-built Kobben class submarine. I understand that they may have up to four more ships which might be stored indoors (or were possibly off-site) - the 1965 MTB Skrei, the 1942 sub-chaser Hitra, the 1873 Torpedo Boat Rap, and a Welman midget submarine.They also had a lot of other outdoor exhibits, including a large number of guns/mountings from the sailing era right through to relatively modern mountings, as well as torpedo tubes, mines, and ASW weapons (Terne AS rocket launcher, Hedgehog & Squid).This place was worth going to when it was closed - it could only be better when it is open!
