The Armed Forces Museum in Oslo is located next to the historic Akershus Fortress (and less than a 10-minute walk from the Alta). This is a typically well-presented professional museum, although it really isn't big enough to do justice to all three services for all of Norway's history. The Navy section was just one hall, which was almost exclusively focused on the Second World War - to my disappointment as I really was hoping to see something about Norway's Coast Defence Battleships from the turn of last century. There were the normal exhibits you would expect to see in a national museum - guns, torpedoes, models, photographs, storyboards etc. Even the superstructure of a post-war missile boat. Some items had a brief English section in the signage, but this wasn't universal. The museum shop had a well-stocked book section, and I managed to pick up an encyclopaedic volume on Norwegian minesweepers. For a country where anything you want typically costs a gazillion dollars, I was startled to get this volume from the remainders desk for less than USD$5!
