Existing Warships that exceeded the Washington Treaty Cruiser Limits
Articles XI and XII of the Washington Naval Treaty which limited the standard displacement and gun calibre of warships other than capital ships and aircraft carriers to 10,000 tons and 8-inches respectively. But it was not a retrospective restriction, and the Treaty Powers operated a large number of existing warships that exceeded those limits, which were permitted to be retained.
