The inland town of Holbrook in southern New South Wales used to be Germantown - until WW1 when that became inappropriate, and they renamed the town after Lt Holbrook, the RN Commander of the submarine B11, who entered the Dardanelles in 1914 and sank the Turkish Battleship Messudiyeh. The town formed an attachment with submarines, and for many years was an unofficial homeport of the Australian Submarine Squadron (until they relocated to Western Australia). The Australian Oberon class submarine Otway was sold for scrap in 1995, however the town of Holbrook purchased Otway's casing, fin, and stern from the scrap metal dealers, and resurrected the submarine near the town centre in a project partially funded by Holbrook's widow. There is now also a small museum onsite, including a replica of the submarines control room, and several other artifacts, including a 1/5th scale replica of the B11.
